Busy weekend for junior athletes

LANCASTER and Morecambe Athletics Club junior athletes had a busy weekend competing at cross country over the fells and on the track.

The last of the Mid Lancs XC fixtures took place at Beacon Park, Skelmersdale on Saturday.

In the U11 girls’ event, Emma Whitaker finished strongly in 10th and nine-year-old Grace Nolan-Barnes should be pleased with her 26th position.

In the U11 boys’ race, first home was the on-form Joseph Twigg in 14th place; 18 seconds behind in 20th place was Liam Hinnigan.

First home in a strong U13 field was Charlotte Whitaker in 13th position. She was joined by Anna Riach (16th); Katie Granger (17th); Lucy Ibison (18th); Eve Sears (20th) and Allana Jones in 24th. Eve finished the series in 18th.

The team finished in fourth, also finishing the series in fourth.

In the U13 boys’ event George Tostevin was 29th finishing the series in 21st.

In the U15 girls’ category Mary Hodgson worked her way through the field taking the lead on the final climb to win her first Mid Lancs race.

She finished the series in fifth. Also competing was Paige Clinton (18th, and 18th overall in the series); Hannah Fleet (22nd and 24th in the series) and Alice Tidswell (27th, and 25th in the series). Jessica McCracken finished the series in 27th.

Second placed team was enough to take the bronze team medal overall. Under 15 boys Isaac and Rafi Scott finished the series in 16th and 23rd respectively.

The second win of the day came in the U17 women’s categories where Sarah Hodgson worked through the field taking the lead on the final lap to win by 15 seconds.

She finished the series in the bronze medal position. School racing commitments meant that only one U17 men toed the line, but James Whitaker should be pleased with fifth.

Overall Callum Mason took the bronze medal and Adam Bateson finished in fourth. The team, however, won the league.

Sarah and Mary Hodgson were back in action the following day in Kendal Winter League Austwick Fell Race. Both won their respective age categories.

The rest of the juniors were in action at Stanley Park, Blackpool for the Winter Warm Up competition on Sunday.

Nineteen Lancaster and Morecambe athletes took part and recorded 27 personal best times and distances.

In the U17 women’s category Alice Tidswell recorded best times in the 80m hurdles and shot put.

In the U15 girls’ events Eve Sears scored PBs in both the hurdles and 100m, while Emma Gribbon, made her mark in the 100m, shot and javelin.

Zoe Lynch recorded PBs in shot, javelin and discus, and there was also a PB for U15 boy Rafi Scott in the 100m.

In the U13 boys’ events there were PBs for Tobi Mustapha in the 80m and 200m and Nathan Slack in the 80m and 600m. George Tostevin won a close fought race with Niall Graham in the 1200m less than a second separating them at the end of the race.

U13 girls, Chloe Hick, had a good day’s racing recording PBs in both the 80m and long jump.

Four U11 competitors also produced PBs; Temi Mustapha, Georgia Shepherd; Imogen Graham and Katherine Tisdall.
