Lowe to defend Commonwealth title against South African Munyai

Isaac Lowe will make the first defence of his Commonwealth featherweight title on another big fight night.

Morecambe’s Westgate Warrior will meet former world title challenger Tshifhiwa Munyai at the Manchester Arena on September 24, on the undercard of the huge unification fight between lightweight world kings Anthony Crolla and Jorge Linares.

Unbeaten Lowe, 12-0-1, won the title at the same venue in February when he stopped Marco McCullough in eight rounds on the night Carl Frampton defeated Scott Quigg.

The news of another huge fight is a big boost for the former Lancaster Boxing Academy man after seeing his hopes of fighting on the Tyson Fury-Wladimir Klitschko undercard dashed by an ankle-injury to his long-time friend.

Lowe was then seen partying out at Euro 2016 with Fury as England lost to Iceland but now must focus on a step-up in class against the South African, who returns to the venue of his world title challenge against Quigg in April 2014.

‘The Atomic Spider’ won the Commonwealth Bantamweight title in England in 2006 against Martin Power, defending it against Lee Haskins and in a rematch with Power.

Munyai’s last two outings have been stoppage wins in Preston, where he trains under Johnney Roye, and the 31-year-old has an experience advantage over Lowe, 10 years senior to the champion and 19 more pro bouts under his belt.

The fight will be live on Sky Sports.
