On Friday night Shaun Michael Varey faced the toughest test of his career as he boxed a two-time national champion.

But coming into the fight on the back of five straight wins he had his Hartlepool opponent down inside the first 20 seconds.

After a standing eight count there was no let up from Varey who soon had the home fighter on the canvas again and this time he failed to beat the count with the Skerton fighter winning by knockout in a landmark victory.

On Saturday two of the Morecambe-based club’s fighters travelled to Kettering.
First through the ropes was 10-year-old Frank Varey, a hot prospect representing the club for the first time.

A gifted young fighter, Varey won all three rounds easily.

Next up was William Birchall and up against an experienced boxer the Skerton fighter was on the front foot from the first bell.

Birchall kept his foot on the gas for a unanimous victory as the club’s fine run continued.
