Bowerham beat the frost to deliver knockout blow

FROST and ice meant another decimated Saturday as 19 games were postponed, bringing the season's total so far to 188 games lost.

Out of the games that did take place, the biggest shock saw Premier Division leaders Storeys knocked out of the Adam and Gaskell Senior Challenge Cup at the third round stage by Bowerham.

Bowerham, the leaders of Division One, set out with the aim of causing an upset and were 2-0 up within 10 minutes.

Adam Browne and Tom Spencely found the net with deserved goals as Storeys were left shell-shocked.

Storeys could have been further behind but got back into the game when Liam Jeffrey pounced on a mistake by the Bowerham keeper to make it 2-1.

Despite getting a goal back, Storeys failed to get on top in the match and it was Bowerham who had most of the possession as they made the game safe when Andy Strachan scored their third for a memorable victory.

Slyne-with-Hest (LCC) A came through 3-1 at Caton United Reserves in the Squires Sports Bar Fisher Howson Remembrance Cup first round on a near-perfect pitch.

Slyne started well but whenver they got in on goal, young Caton keeper Oliver Beeson kept them out. Caton gradually got into the game and but produced some poor finishing and wayward passing.

They did take the lead after 35 minutes when 16-year-old James Postlethwaite sprinted clear and then calmly chipped the keeper for his first senior goal in only his second game.

This appeared to deflate the Slyne side but, with half-time approaching, Gary Johnston showed his experience to draw his side level with a 15-yard shot. Within 45 seconds, Slyne took the lead when another Johnston shot beat an unsighted Beeson.

The second half was much better than the first with both sides attacking and playing open football. Caton hit the bar and Slyne made them pay as Britt Bays scored the key third goal.

In the Premier Division, Halton Rangers felt they were unlucky to lose 2-1 to a good workmanlike Ingleton side.

Despite Halton being the better side, they went in at the break 1-0 behind to a Tommy Murray goal. Halton continued to play well but their equalising goal by Chris Wright was a fluke.

The Ingleton defence were kept busy but Halton could not score their second and Ingleton were able to break away to set up Chris Bibby who rounded the keeper for the winner.

Highgrove FC met Cartmel in what turned out to be a game played with flair and passion.

For the opening 20 minutes, Highgrove threatened to overrun Cartmel – only for them to go behind when Cartmel's Joel Drinkall scored a brilliant goal.

The equaliser came for Highgrove after sustained pressure when Dan Broadley scored a well worked goal.

The game ebbed and flowed with both sides looking for the winner, and when it came it was from an unexpected source with Highgrove full-back Dean Palochek finding the net.

Swarthmoor Social Club missed the chance of gaining maximum points when they could only draw 2-2 with Galgate.

Swarthmoor looked the better side but could not shake off a determined Galgate side.

It was no surprise when Swarthmoor went in front through Gavin Jolley and Stuart Armistead thought his goal had won it for Swarthmoor when he made it 2-1.

However, Galgate scored the equaliser in time added on as Richard Cragg scored his second to earn his side a good point.

In Division One, Marsh United Reserves enjoyed a good win over Grange.

Once Marsh took the lead there was only going to be one winner. A penalty converted by Andy Thomas set them on their way with goals also coming from Scott Sparks, recent signing from Middleton Bruno Oliver, Stuart Phillips and Kevin Armistead.

Veteran Dave Robinson scored Grange's consolation.

Division Two's match of the day was between leaders Bolton-le-Sands and Arnside, both sides chasing promotion. The game was fast and furious but played in a good spirit.

Either side could have won but it was the deadly Mark Smith who gave Sands the edge, scoring two opportunist goals with the third and winning goal being scored by Connor Brown.

Arnside played really well and deserved their goals two goals scored by James Bland and Mark Smith. Arnside piled on the pressure but could not get the equaliser.

Freehold FC entertained Morecambe Cricket Club in another promotion clash – and came through as impressive 4-1 winners.

The game did not disappoint, but nobody could have expected the first half to have been quite so one sided as it turned out.

The game changed after 10 minutes the game changed when Jimmy Watters hit a shot from outside the penalty area to make it 1-0 to Freehold.

Richard Chambers crossed, Ian Palwankar dummied his marker and Liam Morgan made it 2-0 five minutes later.

It was all Freehold and another great move set up Watters whose terrific shot hit the post only for Phil Bushell to score from the rebound.

Freehold made it 4-0 on the stroke of half time with a brilliant diving header by Morgan.

The second half was much more even with MCC with the sun at their backs finding it easier. Freehold had to defend for long periods but their resistance was broken with 10 minutes left as MCC substitute David Riley scored to make the final score 4-1.

In the Division Three Fairclough/Woodruff/Parkinson/Collegian Cup first round, the oft-postponed game between Gregson FC and Boys Club Reserves finally took place with Gregson winning 2-1 with goals from Tim Hall and Dominic Williams cancelling out a strike by John Norman.

In Division Four, the old stagers Morecambe Gold and tmet he young guns of Highgrove Colts. The match was a fascinating one between two sides with different styles.

The first half was really good with the wily old fox Eddie McGaragher putting in front.

The second half saw the younger Colts get to grips wth the game and Justin Doyle deservedly equalised. But the impressive McGaragher got the winner for Gold as he latched onto the ball to score a cracker.

Overton Reserves nearly brought off what would have been a shock win against College AFC Reserves in a nine goal thriller, the College side just edging the game 5-4.

Mark Foster, Matthew Tyson and a brace from Peter Marin scored for Overton but College edged it through Paul Fairclough (2), Nick Barratt and a brace by Joe Daley.

With the demise of Middleton FC, Overton FC have taken over Middleton for their home games.
