Join balloon race and help support hospice campaign

The day Hospice.

The day Hospice.

Today we launch the Save Our Hospice Virtual Balloon Race.

This is the next major event as part of the Lancaster and Morecambe Newspapers appeal to raise £500,000 to preserve St John’s Hospice for future generations.

For just £3 you can buy a ‘balloon’ and watch it fly when the race starts on March 7 with the one that travels the furthest being crowned the winner seven days later.

And whoever’s victorious will win a great family day out courtesy of Megazone, Morecambe Superbowl, Reel Cinemas and Frankie and Benny’s.

But this is a balloon race with a twist - as there are no actual balloons.

Your £3 buys you a card with the unique code allowing you to design your balloon and then follow its progress online when the race starts on Friday, March 7 at 10am.

Wind direction and weather will play its part. Will your balloon cross the country or pop in the first tree outside the hospice?

The event is a first for the area and our aim is to sell 5,000 balloons over the next month.

Alongside this we are also running a competition involving local primary schools.

The school which sells the most balloons pro rata will receive 20 per cent of the money they raise to spend in their school.

The following schools have so far signed up, but we want as many in the district to be involved: Wilson’s Endowed CE School, Torrisholme Community Primary School, St Peter’s Heysham, North Road Carnforth, Christ Church Lancaster, Bolton-le-Sands Primary School and Caton Community School.

But the balloon race isn’t just for kids, anyone can get involved.

To enter the race you can purchase your balloon card for £3 from the hospice reception, any of the hospice’s nine charity shops, the Lancaster and Morecambe Newspapers office on Victoria Street, Morecambe, or online at www.rabr.co.uk/SJH.

Or you can simply fill in and send off the coupon on this page.

And if your school, business or community group wants to be involved, contact Anna Scott on 01524 382538 or anna.scott@sjhospice.org.uk.
