THE situation at the top of the Premier Division got even closer at the weekend.
Leaders Marsh United dropped two points in a 1-1 draw from a hard game at Cartmel.

Marc Goulding scored the goal for Marsh with Scott Burrows equalising for Cartmel in a game neither side deserved to lose.

Storeys won a hard-fought three points by edging out Morecambe Hoops by the odd goal in seven to draw level on points with Marsh.

Player-manager Steven Stirzaker scored twice for Storeys, Jonathon Pedder and Paul Airey adding the others. Hoops replied through Chris McManaman, Rob Gouldsbor-ough and Vernon Middleton.

Highgrove kept up their title push with a 3-0 win in a tricky game against TIC Dynamos who raised their game.

TIC should have scored first but it was Highgrove who made them pay with Dan Broadley scoring. Ex-Highgrove man Craig Holme scored for TIC but Highgrove ran away with it with further goals from Luke Ogley and Damon Graham.

Kirkby Lonsdale stopped the losing run when late in the game Alex Taylor scored to sink a gallant Swarthmoor side that are not going down without a fight.

Galgate and Morecambe Royals fought out a thrilling goalless draw, which was a fair result.

Caton United played quite well for the bottom team against Carnforth Rangers but still lost 6-0 with five coming after the break. Byron Nixon and Steve Oliver both scored twice.

The Division One Holdens Solicitors/Gibson Cup semi-final between Marsh United Reserves and Highgrove Reserves was a good game with some excellent football.

Highgrove did have problems in containing Bruno Oliver, he scored two great goals to set Marsh on the way while Kieron Moffatt also notched a couple.

Highgrove replied with the goal of the game by Danny Lofthouse, the other by Daryl Suligowski. Marsh will now meet Bowerham in the final.

In League matches, there was joy for only one of the leading three promotion hopefuls.

Bowerham travelled to play Cartmel Reserves in what looked like a tricky fixture for the young side, but they came through 2-1.

Andy Strachan had given Bowerham the lead only to be pegged back by the evergreen Paul Airey from a free-kick.

It looked as though the team to score next would win and it proved so when Cartmel conceded a soft goal to Simon Gillespie.

Bentham lost 2-0 at Storeys Reserves in another tricky fixture. The game was played at a fast pace, but neither set of forwards could make headway.

Storeys went in front when defender Joe Flynn showed his forwards how to score. Defensive partner Liam Westworth scored his side's second goal to deny Bentham.

Slyne-with-Hest (LCC) were beaten by Boys Club for the second week in a row. Slyne played much better than last week but found it hard in breaking down a good Boys Club defence.

Michael Denwood scored his usual goal for Slyne and Joe Proud made it 1-1 as a draw looked likely. But, with just seconds remaining, Boys Club gained a corner from which the Slyne defender Paul Denny scored a brilliantly headed own goal to give Boys Club the win.

Ingleton Reserves moved up the table two places after beating Grange in an all-action game.

Both sides could have won but missed a host of chances before half-time. Ingleton did manage three after the break through Will Smith, Alex Hartley and Ben O'Hagan to win 3-1, leaving Grange staring at the drop.

An intriguing game between Millhead and College AFc saw the home side snatch all points with a 2-1 win, young Carl Wakeman scoring two great goals. Wayne Dixon was accredited with the College goal.

Torrisholme are fighting for survival and they outplayed Morecambe Royals Reserves for the opening 15 minutes with Earl Suligowski opening the scoring. But they could not keep up the momentum and allowed Rob Powell to equalise.

Torrisholme went all out to regain the lead which they did with a good goal from Nicholas Dacres. Again Torrishome could not consolidate and Adam Campbell equalised before half-time to round off the scoring.
Division Two leaders Bolton-le-Sands had their work cut out before beating a workmanlike Kirkby Lonsdale Reserves.

Kirkby must rue their missed chances as goals by Joe Khan and Mark Smith sealed the win for Sands, who only need five points from their last four games to go up.

Third played fourth as Arnside met Furness Rovers but neither side wanted the 2-2 draw that ensued from what was a disappointing game.
Second-placed Freehold capitalised on that draw by beating Swarthmoor Reserves 7-3 to go four points away from Arnside.

Despite going behind, Freehold soon took charge and led 4-1 by half-time. Swarthmoor rallied to make it 4-2 after the break but Richard Chambers went on to complete a hat-trick as Freehold won comfortably.
Caton United Reserves lost again, 4-1 to Morecambe Cricket Club, despite starting in brilliant fashion with an early goal from James Postlethwaite.

The second half saw a big chance as MCC scored four times through Adam Cordingly, Paul Woodhouse, Andrew Forbes and Sam McKee.

Galgate Reserves look doomed to relegation but they gave their all against Westgate Wanderers but Stuart McClean was the difference, scoring twice in a 3-2 win for Westgate.

Overton kept alive their hopes of promotion with an emphatic 6-0 win over Slyne-with-Hest (LCC) 'A' with goals from Ben Lowther (2), Oliver Wellock (2), Peter Marin and Ritchie Lyons.

In Division Three, Allithwaite Rangers remain as leaders after winning a hard-fought game against Bentham Reserves 2-1.

Halton Rangers Reserves are chasing the leaders hard and beat Bolton-le-Sands Reserves 3-0 with Richard McDonnell scoring a brilliant hat-trick.
Carnforth Rangers Reserves left it late before beating Gregson 2-1 in an excellent game, Jamie Wakeman scoring a superb winner.

Boys Club Reserves kept alove their hopes of avoiding the drop with a 2-0 win at Heysham with a goal in each half.

Division Four leaders Morecambe Gold were fortunate to get a point from their game with the much-improved Villa Royale. The game finished 2-2 although Villa had chances to win it after Jamie Luraschi had made it 2-2.

Second-placed Moghuls were 3-0 winners over Highgrove Colts with Tony Hoyle scoring with a brilliant 25-yard shot.

AFC Moorlands shared four goals in a draw with mid-table Millhead Reserves, who had Steve Wood to thank for their two goals.
