THERE were only five games that beat the weekend frost in the Lancaster Honda North Lancashire League with Marsh United making the most of their rivals' week off to take top spot in the Premier Division.
Marsh look to be in a three-horse race for the title with Storeys and Highgrove. They were due to play each other at York Road but the frost meant that was one of the many postponements.
That allowed Marsh to go ahead of Storeys on goal difference with both teams having played 15 games.
Marsh did not have everything their own way on Saturday against relegation-haunted Swarthmoor Social Club – despite going into a 3-0 lead.
Marsh raced out of the blocks and with goals from Dale Williams, Sean Bateson and Danny Hunt, they appeared to be coasting.
But just before half-time, Swarthmoor reduced the arrears when a Marsh defender put the ball into his own goals to make it 3-1.
The second half was much better for the home side and in Paul Cleasby they had the potential match-winner as he scored two great goals to level the game at 3-3.
Swarthmoor went all out looking for another goal to secure their first win of the season but, with just two minutes remaining, tragedy struck the home side. Marsh broke away and Lee Sparks scored a controversial winner with the home side appealing for offside with the linesman's flag raised.
Carnforth Rangers overcame a potential banana skin in the fourth round of the Adam and Gaskell Senior Challenge Cup against Division One side College AFC.
College had been playing well of late but Rangers started well with two quick goals from Matthew Garwood.
Wayne Dixon replied with a good goal for College only for Carnforth to hit back immediately through Adam Iley.
College had no reply to this and Carnforth added further goals through Byron Nixon (2) and Ben Price to set up a semi-final with Highgrove or Ingleton.
No games were played in Division One and only one game in Division Two beat the weather when Morecambe Cricket Club beat Galgate Reserves 7-2 at Trimpell – the same score as last week when the teams met.
MCC had to come from behind after Josh Dixon scored a great goal. Andy Forbes equalised and Graham Cassidy gave MCC a 2-1 lead with a tap-in.
Forbes, Jonathon Knowles, Gareth Pedder and Paul Woodhouse made it 6-1 before John Cardo wriggled his way through for Galgate to make it 6-2.
The scoring was rounded off by MCC's Matthew Healey as his team moved up to fourth in the table.
All Division Three games were postponed but, in Division Four, Heysham's pitch was good enough for them to host AFC Moorlands.
Moorlands went into the lead when Andy Woodcock scored but Heysham deservedly equalised when a bad mistake gave Jason Conroy a goal as he rounded the keeper.
Heysham went into a deserved 2-1 half-time lead.
Andy Bushell, who had previously missed a sitter, made up for it with a great equaliser and Moorlands grabbed a winner with just five minutes remaining through Gareth Walker.
This win moves AFC Moorlands up two places to third and just five points behind second-placed Moghuls in the race for promotion.
In the Westmorland Football Association Junior Cup second round, Cartmel Reserves won 2-0 at Kirkby Lonsdale Reserves after extra-time.
