Homage to Midland hotel’s lost mural
The mural, by artist Jonquil Cook, will pay homage to hotel’s lost mural painted by Eric Ravilious in 1933.
The mural depicted two seaside scenes, one set during the day and the other at night.
It was inspired by the local landscape and heavily influenced by The Midland’s elegant art deco architecture.
The mural was reconstructed temporarily for an episode of the TV series Poirot, which was filmed at The Midland in 1989.
Artist Jonquil Cook, who will be assisted by Isa Clee-Cadman, says “I am a huge admirer of Ravilious’ work and I think it is such a shame that his wonderful mural is no longer here for people to enjoy.
“However, I have put a great deal of thought into this project and I hope I can produce a homage to Ravilious’ mural, which works in the available space and is in keeping with the rest of the hotel.”
