Patrols have been stepped up at a popular beauty spot where people are ignoring safety warnings and jumping from a bridge into the water.
South Lakeland District Council’s Enforcement Team have stepped up patrols at Devils Bridge in Kirkby Lonsdale, where there is a bylaw that prohibits anyone from jumping off the bridge.
Last Thursday, an SLDC Enforcement Officer, witnessed a man jumping from the bridge at about 2pm and reported the matter to the police. Police spoke to the 24-year-old man from Lancaster who was reported for contravening a bylaw.
Inspector Paul Latham said: “I would appeal to the public, local communities and councillors to report anyone they see jumping off Devils Bridge. With this evidence we can then take action against people breaking the bylaw.”
Inspector David Stalker from Cumbria Police said: “People who take risks such as these are putting their own lives and the lives of the rescue services at risk.
“Jumping off bridges into the river is completely senseless and dangerous act and could end up tragedy.
In 2012, Darrell Teal, 22, died after jumping 30ft from the bridge into the river.
