A MAJOR conservation initiative in Morecambe Bay is inviting local nature lovers to take part in a special volunteering day aimed at helping wildlife in Arnside.

The event – which takes place on Wednesday February 20 across four sites – is being hosted by the Morecambe Bay Limestones and Wetlands Nature Improvement Area together with the Woodland Trust and the Conservation Volunteers.

Made up of 10 partners, the Nature Improvement Area was created to improve, expand and join up existing wildlife-rich areas within the Morecambe Bay area.

Tania Crockett, community engagement officer for the Nature Improvement Area, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for people to get to know some of the special sites for nature in and around Arnside, and to help to improve these places for wildlife.

“We will be working on four sites – Arnside Knott, Grubbins Wood, Dobshall Wood and Far Arnside.

“Volunteers will be able to choose which site they want to work on, and help with essential practical tasks such as cutting back overgrown trees and vegetation.

“You don’t need any experience, just lots of enthusiasm.

“This habitat restoration work will benefit a range of birds and plants, as well as rare species of butterfly such as high brown fritillary, Duke of Burgundy and scotch argus.

“Morecambe Bay is an amazing place for nature and wildlife.

“By working with local communities and volunteers, the Nature Improvement Area partnership is enhancing, restoring and connecting the special habitats and species across the area, giving nature a chance to not only survive but to thrive into the future.”

The volunteer day runs from 9.30am to 3.30pm. Volunteers should meet at Arnside Youth Hostel Association in Redhills Road at Arnside where they will be taken on to their site of choice.
