Underground fire at Salt Ayre waste site

FIRE crews spent more than five hours tackling an underground fire at the Salt Ayre landfill site.

A nearby worker spotted smoke coming from the ground and two fire engines from Lancaster, plus appliances from Morecambe and Bolton-le-Sands, were called to the scene at 8.40am on Saturday.

Firefighters used a 20-tonne digger to excavate the ground and discovered a smouldering fire beneath a membrane covering household waste including plastic bags.

A water relay was set up from a hydrant behind the nearby Asda store to put out the fire and crews left the scene at around 2pm.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
