The Lancaster City legend, who made more than 400 appearances for the club across 10 years at Giant Axe, died on Wednesday at the age of 31 after a battle with cancer.

Former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher and world champion boxer Anthony Crolla had been amongst those to send messages of support to Marshall’s family and friends and the long-time Dolly Blues captain continued to be honoured over the weekend.

Morecambe singer Stuart Michaels, wearing Marshall’s old number five shirt, performed his and wife Kim’s wedding song, Jason Mraz’s ‘I Won’t Give Up’, to a packed Market Square at Lancaster’s Christmas Lights switch-on event.

It was followed by a minute’s applause, a tribute also done before games in both the Lancaster and Morecambe Service to Youth League and the North Lancashire and District Football League at the weekend.

Marshall’s young son Max was amongst those to take part ahead of his side, Marsh Under 7s, facing Highgrove.

At the Globe Arena local rivalry was put to one side as Morecambe fans did a minute’s applause in the fifth minute of their League Two game against Luton Town.

In his programme notes, Shrimps boss Jim Bentley said: “Neil was a local legend with Lancaster City and was a great servant to them.

“I know he will be sadly missed by all.”

There was also a tribute from Marshall’s former Dolly Blues team mate Joe Bunney, now with Rochdale, who revealed an ‘RIP Marshy’ shirt after scoring in their 4-0 win over Swindon Town.

Lancaster’s City game at Colne was called off with the club set to honour one of their greatest ever players on Tuesday night when they host Mossley at Giant Axe.

There will be a tribute ahead of the game with all gate receipts going to the Neil Marshall Memorial Fund.

Fans are advised to arrive early for the 7.45pm kick-off.
