The M61 has now been reopened at Junction 9 - where it joins the M6 – after a crash caused emergency crews to close the road.

A male motorcyclist has been taken to hospital after being involved in a serious collision with a car.

Police were forced to close the northbound stretch of motorway so that ambulance crews could treat the injured man.

Fire crews from Bamber Bridge were also on the scene.

The motorcyclist has now been taken to Royal Preston Hospital and the road has reopened.

NW Motorway Police tweeted: “All lanes are now open. Many thanks for your continued support. One male taken to hospital, we wish him a speedy recovery.”

The road closure cuased long delays in the area.

Delays had also been reported further north on the M6 due to a broken down vehicle between junction 34 and Junction 35 at Carnforth.
