MORECAMBE’S coat of arms mosaic could be flattened as part of a £200,000 facelift for the town centre.

A mooted upgrade of the area outside the back entrance of the Arndale Centre, where the mosaic is located, could also include new seating, lighting and public artwork.

The sloping stone landmark, which is owned by Lancaster City Council, could be removed in its current form.

But a council report suggests the town’s coat of arms – with its slogan “Beauty surrounds, health abounds” – may be incorporated into a new “open plan” design for New Town Square and Euston Road precinct.
