Ten reasons why we're proud of Morecambe

Today we launch our new Pride in Morecambe campaign. Over the coming weeks and months we will feature stories about people, places, anything that makes us proud of our beautiful seaside town. To kick things off we list 10 of the main reasons why we have Pride in Morecambe

1 OUR PROMENADE

Our seafront is the envy of many a town and city. Five miles of walkway, breathtaking views across Morecambe Bay, golden sandy beaches, what’s not to be proud of? As the town motto says, Beauty Surrounds, Health Abounds.

2 MIDLAND HOTEL

Since its restoration and reopening in 2008 the gleaming white 1930s art deco hotel on the promenade has regained its place as the jewel in Morecambe’s crown – a destination for tourists and local people alike.

Our town’s favourite son, the TV comedian who took his stage name from his place of birth and made us famous all over the world, and whose legacy includes the much-loved Eric Morecambe Statue which is firmly established as Morecambe’s number one tourist attraction.

4 FOOD

Whether it’s our royally approved potted shrimps, our tasty fish and chips or our champion Morecambe Football Club pies, the town has a proven track record for quality food production.

5 FESTIVALS

Vintage-by-the-Sea, the Morecambe Carnival, the Catch the Wind kite festival, the League of Splendid’s steampunk festival and many others give Morecambe a unique and colourful place on the North West’s events calendar.

6 STARS OF SPORT

Morecambe is home not only to our League Two football team but also TT motorbike race legend John McGuinness and world ranked darts ace Dave ‘Chizzy’ Chisnall. This is a golden age for Morecambe sport and we are proud of our stars and their achievements.

7 THE BAY GATEWAY

The long-awaited Heysham to M6 link road has made a positive difference to many people’s lives. Traffic congestion has reduced, Morecambe is easier to reach from the motorway, and the road’s arrival has boosted many of our businesses and trade at Heysham Port.

8 THE WINTER GARDENS

Our town’s magnificent theatre is 120 years old this year and remains a jaw-dropping example of 19th century architecture. The tireless Friends of the Winter Gardens have worked so hard to keep the theatre open and continue to make improvements.

9 THE LIFEBOAT CREW

The volunteers of the Morecambe RNLI are true heroes, on-call to venture out onto Morecambe Bay to save lives at a moment’s notice.

10 OUR HERITAGE

Morecambe has a rich and diverse history, including its origins when the fishing village of Poulton joined with Bare and Torrisholme, and its heyday as an entertainment mecca with multiple cinemas, theatres and piers. Some of these memories are still kept alive today at the town’s Morecambe Heritage Centre.
