A police spokesman said the lorry was forced to stop in the middle of the roundabout at Slyne on the new link road after breaking down, and later needed specialist lifting equipment to move it after it became stuck in mud.

Police put a diversion in place following the incident just before 7am today, Wednesday, after traffic jams were caused by motorists slowing down to witness the scene.

There have been online reports suggesting the lorry may have mounted the roundabout accidentally, but police confirmed that there was no indication that this was the case.
