Motorists faced congestion on the M6 in Lancashire following two crashes.
Traffic was slow moving between junctions 32 at Preston and 34 at Lancaster on Saturday afternoon.
A car hit the central reservation at 1.30pm as it travelled south-bound between junctions 33 and 32. It was moved to the hard shoulder.
In another incident, a silver Nissan Micra was recovered from the hard shoulder on the north-bound carriageway between junctions 33 and 34 at 3.15pm.
Tailbacks were aggravated by large numbers of holidaymakers heading north and long-running roadworks at junction 34.
