River levels monitored as floods alerts lifted

Flooding alerts were '‹lifted today '‹after Lancashire emerged largely unscathed from last night's high winds and heavy rain.

The Environment Agency had issued an alert for the Rivers Ribble and Calder, but today reduced that to monitoring river levels across the county as better weather was expected.

A spokesman said: “Rivers have now dropped below standby levels. It is expected to remain largely dry through the rest of Saturday morning.

“Further rainfall is expected from Saturday afternoon and through to Sunday although this is not expected to be as heavy or persistent as that experienced on Friday night.”

Two fire engines from Darwen were called to several properties on Clough Street in the town after the river strainer was blocked.

Firefighters used pumps to reduce the water levels and they managed to clear the strainer to a level that allowed the incident to be passed over to the Environment Agency.

Two fire engines from Hyndburn were called to a property in Whalley Road, Accrington, which had eight inches of flood water in its cellar.

The flood water was affecting the electrics in the house and firefighters used pumps to take the water out of the cellar.
