Remembrance Sunday: Local events

Remembrance Day services will be held in Morecambe, Lancaster and Carnforth this Sunday.

Everyone is welcome to go along to remember all who died for their country in the two World Wars and also those who served in more recent operations in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Iraq.

Remembrance Day services will take place as follows:

Morecambe: Cenotaph, Marine Road – A procession will form up at the Platform, led by Morecambe band, leaving at approximately 10.40am for a service and two minutes silence at the cenotaph.

Lancaster: Garden of Remembrance, Town Hall, Lancaster starting at 10.20am, followed by a service in the Priory Church at 11.30am.

There will be a parade and march past leaving the Priory Church and ending at Lancaster Town Hall at approximately 12.20pm.

Carnforth: The parade will leave the council offices on Market Street at approximately 10.30am and then proceed along North Road and New Street to the war memorial for a service at 11am.

To help people to pay their respects, Lancaster City Council has suspended parking charges on the car parks at the Bay Arena in Morecambe and Nelson Street in Lancaster on Remembrance Sunday.

Morecambe Band will also be performing their annual Remembrance Concert at the Platform in Morecambe on Saturday, November 12 at 7.30pm.

Proceeds are donated to the British Legion Poppy Appeal and the Army and Navy cadets. Tickets cost £12/£10/£6 and are available online at www.lancaster.gov.uk/platform or the box office on 01524 582803.

Morecambe Poppyscatter will run a family day to mark Remembrance Day on Sunday at Bare Village Club.

From noon there will be a 5k walk/run from the venue around Bare, with medals for all who finish.

Then from 1pm, Cameron Seddon will host a slideshow of old Bare photos and history in the club.

There will also be a display of World War One uniforms and artfacts, a buffet lunch and a charity auction.

Admission to the event is £7.50 including entry into the walk/run, or £5 just for the walk/run or entry to the club.

All funds go to Morecambe Poppyscatter who organise displays of poppies around the town including the Battle of the Somme memorial display in Happy Mount Park.

The Ashton Memorial in Williamson Park, Lancaster, will be lit up in red from Friday to mark Remembrance Day.
