Alison Bargh and Helen Ashton set off on a 24-hour 100k walk in aid of CancerCare and Portage Wiltshire on Saturday, but the event was eventually cancelled due to poor weather conditions, which made the full course too dangerous.

“Our challenge didn’t go quite to plan,” Alison said. “We never gave up, dug deep, stayed focused and walked as far as the organisers allowed – 36 miles, 13 hours.”

“A Bear Grylls survival course rather than a walk – driving rain and sleet, wading through floods, thick fog and rescuing Helen, who was sinking thigh deep in a peat bog, were the highlights!

“When we were told the event was cancelled we had mixed feelings of relief, coupled with disappointment.

“We wanted to continue and complete what we had set out to do, especially as we had passed our fundraising targets before we set off – we simply didn’t want to let anyone down. Calling the event off was however the correct decision and allowed us all to get home safely. We are delighted with the amount we have raised.”
