A Morecambe canine specialist is hoping to be crowned top dog after being shortlisted for a national award.

Diddy Dapper Dogs, in Marine Road Central, only opened in October but is one of seven outlets in the running to be named UK Pet Retailer of the Year at the inaugural PetQuip Industry Awards.

Run by Nigel and Tracy Robinson, the store sells unusual products and accessories for man’s best friend.

It was created when they struggled to find a collar and lead to fit their miniature Dachshund puppy, Lola, and realised there was a gap in the market.

Nigel said: “It is less than one year since we opened our first shop premises in Morecambe – prior to this we had been market traders for 6-plus months and we still have a permanent stall at Bury Market – so when we put ourselves forward to be considered for this award we never imagined that we would be in the finalists shortlist!”

The awards – divided into seven categories – will be presented at a gala awards dinner at the Majestic Hotel in Harrogate on September 15. It will coincide with pet trade show PATTS, which will be held in the North Yorkshire town.

Pat Flynn, trade association manager for PetQuip, said: “We have attracted an impressive number of entries for this, our first event, and we are looking forward to celebrating with all the winning retailers and product manufacturers.”
