Last week I attended a question time debate at the Campus in the City shop on Cheapside that was organised by Lancaster and Cumbria Universities’ students unions.

All the candidates were present and I hope we managed to give a full hearing to all the issues raised.

I also had a meeting with representatives from the Prison Officers Union at Lancaster Farms Prison with regards to some of the issues they are facing with violence and suicides

It was certainly professionally organised and chaired throughout so my thanks to the two unions and their officers.

I also had a meeting with representatives from the Prison Officers Union at Lancaster Farms Prison with regards to some of
the issues they are facing with violence and
suicides.

I am aware that the prison service is often seen as the ‘Cinderella’ of public services – however I hope I was able to give them some assurance that we all do recognise the pressures they face in both keeping us all safe while working to rehabilitate prisoners.

Finally, I met with a couple of entrepreneurial students from Lancaster University, who are both currently designing ‘apps’ that they hope to market commercially.

I must say that the enthusiasm both these students showed for their projects really made for a stimulating meeting and again
raised the issue of how we bring together new entrepreneurs with investors locally.

Also more long term how we build locally a more ‘wired up’ city with the support systems available to develop this local talent here in Lancaster rather than losing so much of this talent to the bigger cities.
