Fitness Formation column

“Failure is the state or condition of not meeting a desirable or intended objective, and may be viewed as the opposite of success.”

The definition of failure.

At some point in our lives, we have all ‘failed’ at something, no matter how big or small this something may be.

What matters is how we have dealt with the setback.

Some people are crippled by it.

They see it as something they cannot possibly achieve.

If I can’t do it first time, I’ll never do it. Others use it as a driving force to make sure that it never happens. I will succeed.

Let’s relate this to health and fitness, as this is what this column is all about, right?

Summer beach body. Party season and that little black dress (or James Bond style tuxedo). Those new year resolutions. Lets face it. Most will have fallen short with these.

Well, this is where that stops, and where success begins. When we try to achieve success, we start the process for a reason. This much is obvious.

What you need to do is to make sure that your ‘success’ is at the forefront of your mind every single time you prepare for any session, say yes to something that may have an impact on your success, or have any negative thoughts about failing.

People often talk about a goal or aim. I prefer to call it your ‘vision’. A goal should be seen as a stepping stone to this vision.

Therefore, you need a series of them. They should be manageable, and within an achievable timeframe. Chase them. Relentlessly.

Each time you achieve one, you are one step closer to your vision. Whether that be to knock everyone in the room over with your new found confidence, not to mention how good you look in your dream outfit. Or whether it’s to be confident and, more importantly, relaxed on the beach.

Be positive about the things that you will achieve. Don’t focus on the things that may go wrong. If failure is one thing, it is proof that you are giving it a damn good go.

Forget about the things you said you were going to achieve in the past, and look forward. The most brilliant people in this world have failed. That’s why they are so successful now. Remember, failure is not an option.
