David Morris column

David Morris MP.
David Morris MP.

This week I was called by the Prime Minister and asked to become the Government’s first ever self employed ambassador.

I was delighted to be selected for this role, not least because I was a self employed businessman myself for nearly 30 years before being elected into the House of Commons.

I was chosen for this role as the investment I have secured here has not gone unnoticed by the Prime Minister and I understand the implications of Government legislation on small businesses.

I have been tasked with finding tangible ways that the Government can help those who are self employed.

This role allows for a voice in Government for people who are self employed and I will be working with business people both locally and nationally to ensure that their voice is heard.

My appointment was coincided with Freelancers day so on the evening of the appointment I addressed the national freelancer conference.

This conference was live streamed across the UK and brought together small business leaders from across the country.

One of my first things I am going to be working on is giving maternity pay to people who are self employed.

On Friday I was pleased to welcome the Home Secretary to Morecambe Police station. Morecambe Police station is the strategic centre to Policing in the whole of my constituency and covers a vast area from Sunderland point to Carnforth and up the Lune Valley. Theresa May MP came to see the success of the recent knife amnesty which saw hundreds of knifes across Lancashire being handed in.

Theresa was impressed by the police team locally and by how hard they were working to ensure that crime is continuing to fall in our area.

Many thanks to Inspector Kirstie Banks Lyon and her team at the Police station for making us welcome and for making the visit interesting and engaging.

As always if you my help I can be contacted by phone on 01524 841225, by email David.morris.mp@parliament.uk or by post Office 204, Riverway House, Morecambe Road, Skerton, LA1 2RX.
