David Morris, Morecambe and Lunesdale MP.

On Tuesday evening I attended Sigh of the Sea in Morecambe, which was a very poignant way to remember the tenth anniversary of the cockle picker’s disaster.

My thanks go to Pete and his team at More Music in conjunction with the Lancaster and Morecambe Chinese Society, the Hua Xian Chinese Society and the many musicians, dancers, singers and other performers who have spent so much time organising the evening.

It was touching to see so many people of all ages pay their respects.

Last week I had a debate in Westminster Hall about the disaster and I have also tabled a Parliamentary motion. The motion reads: “That this House notes that Lin Liang Ren, Lin Mu Yong and Zhao Xiao Qing were all convicted for their involvement in the Morecambe Bay cockle pickers’ disaster; further notes that the 10th anniversary of the disaster is in February 2014; considers that the people of Morecambe deserve to know how many years each served in prison in the UK; and further considers that the people of Morecambe deserve to know when they were deported and whether they are currently incarcerated in their native China.”
