LOCALS in Warton could rub shoulders with Barack Obama if the US President accepts an invite to visit the village.

Mr Obama has been invited to travel to Warton during his state visit in May by Morecambe and Lunesdale MP David Morris due to the village’s links with George Washington, the first president of the United States.

Mr Washington was a descendant of the Washington family of Warton, who moved to the village from the North East in the mid thirteenth century.

An invitation has been sent to the White House by Mr Morris, who also tabled a motion in the House of Commons suggesting that Mr Obama should visit Warton.

In it, Mr Morris said the visit would help the village to become a popular tourist attraction.
