OAPs rescued from flooded road

AN elderly couple were rescued by hovercraft after their car became stuck in flood water on the road from Sunderland Point to Overton.

Firefighters from Lancaster, Morecambe and Preston, paramedics and police were also called to the scene about a quarter of a mile from The Globe pub to help the couple following the 10m high tide.

Fire crews had inflatable boats on standby but they were not needed during the incident, which happened at 1.40pm on Thursday.

Watch Manager Leo Loughry, of Lancaster Fire Station, said: “The hovercraft came down the River Lune and picked the couple up.

“The water was halfway up the wheels of their car and the road was completely covered with water.

“They had been driving towards The Globe and had thought they could make it.

“The couple were wet but they were in good spirits and were not hurt.”

The couple did not need hospital treatment.
