A MAN is in a critical condition in hospital after being punched in the face.

The 55-year-old victim, who has not been named by police, was assaulted in an unprovoked attack on Queen Street in Morecambe. He fell to the ground and according to a witness, hit his head on the kerb.

The attacker then fled the scene.

The victim was taken to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary but was later transferred to the Royal Preston Hospital, where he remains critically ill.

Police have launched a major investigation following the serious assault at 1.15am on Monday.

Officers cordoned off an area of pavement on the street where the attack took place and crime scene investigators were at the scene all day Monday.

Ross Kidd from Bay Beds on Queen Street said: “The forensic people have been here all afternoon and the pavement has been taped off all day.

“I believe the victim isn’t in a good way.”

Detective Superintendent Martin Kay said: “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed what happened to come forward and contact the police.

“This is a particularly nasty assault where the victim is gravely ill in hospital and the person responsible needs to be caught and dealt with.

“The victim’s family have been informed and are with him at hospital and we have specially trained officers supporting them.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Lancaster police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
