A 32-year-old man has died after being hit by a car on the M6 as he apparently attempted to get away from police.

The man failed to stop for a police patrol in the Blackpool area at around 9pm on Sunday evening.

He made off in a grey Ford Focus Sport travelling eastbound on the M55 before joining the southbound carriageway of the M6.

At around 9.20pm the man pulled over onto the hard shoulder one mile north of the Charnock Richard service station and crossed three lanes of traffic on foot where he was hit by a car on the northbound carriageway.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The motorway was closed in both directions between junctions 27 and 28 throughout the night until around 8.30am this morning as the scene was examined.

Now, the case has been referred to police watchdog the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

There are still severe delays on the M6 in Lancashire and on surrounding roads.

Lancashire Police appealed to anyone who witnessed the crash to contact them on 101.
