Young Morecambe politician wants to stand in General Election

Joshua Brandwood from Morecambe, who represents Out Moss Lane ward on Morecambe Town Council, said he intends to put his name forward as Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Labour at the next election.

Mr Brandwood, a supporter of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, was elected to Morecambe Town Council in 2015.

He said he wanted to “make positive changes to my beautiful home town of Morecambe”.

“I think it is the right time under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership to put my name forward,” said Coun Brandwood.

“I am tired of the inequalities in society and would like to make a real difference to both my constituency and the rest of the UK.”

He said he would campaign to improve mental health services, protect and increase funding to front line public services and campaign to build more council homes and affordable housing.

The current MP for Morecambe, the Conservative David Morris, was re-elected to the seat in the 2015 General Election, defeating Labour candidate Amina Lone into second place.

The next General Election is due in 2020 although there has been speculation that an earlier election may be called after the fall-out from the vote to leave the European Union.

The Labour candidate for Morecambe and Lunesdale will not be chosen until closer to an election date.
