RNLI crewman's 140 mile cycle for friend's granddaughter

A Royal National Lifeboat Institution crewman has raised hundreds by cycling 140 miles from Morecambe to Scarborough.

Chris Patton set off on his journey from Morecambe on Tuesday July 12 and has so far raised nearly £600 for the RNLI charity.

The 47-year-old completed the challenge over two days, arriving at Scarborough’s temporary lifeboat station at around 5pm, where he was greeted and thanked by crew members Mark Rawling and Rudi Barman.

Mr Patton wants to share the money raised between the RNLI and a friend’s three-year-old-granddaughter, Imogen Diggle.

Imogen has a brain tumour, is going blind and is currently undergoing chemotherapy.

Chris, who has 20 grandchildren, volunteers on Morecambe’s D-class inshore lifeboat and hovercraft. He works as a signalman at Preston railway station.

John Senior, Scarborough RNLI’s lifeboat operations manager, said: “This is a fantastic fundraising effort by one of the RNLI’s many volunteers.

“The RNLI is extremely grateful to Chris for his sterling effort.”
