Two self-proclaimed ‘old codgers’ have raised more than £1,000 for charity by cycling all the way to Spain.

Richard Boot, who is 69 and lives in Caton, and his old schoolfriend Peter Wheeler, 70, took three weeks to reach Spain, raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support along the way.

They cycled unassisted from Brittany to the Spanish border, and have raised more than £1,000 for the charity.

The pair completed about 1,200km at about 75km per day, with three rest days.

Richard, who has lived in the Lancaster area for more than 34 years, was formerly a Lancaster University lecturer and also a rugby coach and referee for Vale of Lune junior teams.

He posted on his JustGiving page: “Well, we made it. Good fortune and the sun shone on us for most of the trip.

“No mechanical problems, not even punctures, and no health problems – just aching knees and a little heat exhaustion on the day it got up to 42C on the road.

“Thanks to all who have donated for Macmillan.”
