Community radio will soon
return to the airwaves in Morecambe and Lancaster.

Ofcom has granted Beyond Radio a five-year licence to broadcast on the FM frequency.

The city has been without a community radio station since the closure of Diversity FM two years ago.

A team led by Duncan Moore, former Diversity FM volunteer co-ordinator, has been campaigning since then for a licence for a new station.

“We’re absolutely delighted,” said Mr Moore, who heads up Proper Community Media (Lancaster) Ltd, the group
behind the bid.

“We can’t wait to bring community radio back to the people of Lancaster and Morecambe.”

Mr Moore said talks were ongoing about a venue for the new station, a launch date, and sponsorship. Beyond Radio will be run entirely by volunteers.

Diversity FM broadcast its final show in April 2012 after a five-year run.

The station, based in the Lancaster YMCA building on Fleet Square, closed after vital grants dried up.

Diversity FM aired a mixture of music and chat hosted by local people, many of whom were trained in radio broadcasting skills at the station.

Mark Read, former
Diversity FM presenter, said: “When Diversity FM closed it was a huge loss to the area.

“Now we have another community station starting up, it gives a voice to local people, a playground for the area’s entertainers and also gives local musicians an outlet for a wider audience.”

The decision will give our area a second station to join commercial radio broadcaster The Bay.

Ofcom also awarded licences to two other Lancashire stations, Radio Victoria in Blackpool and Ribble FM in Clitheroe, as well as Heritage Community Radio in Manchester, Bury Community Radio, Radio Barnsley and Radio Warrington.

The watchdog rejected bids from Trafford Sound, Retro Radio, FM Manchester Asia, Blackburn Youth Radio, Monster Radio, Mighty FM and Radio Scarborough.
