New Lancashire fracking sites identified

Two new potential “fracking” site in Lancashire have been identified by shale gas company Cuadrilla.

The company has identified two sites between Blackpool and Preston - near Roseacre and Little Plumpton - scaling back original plans to frack at seven sites.

It is the first time a shale gas company is seeking planning permission for fracking since an 18 month ban was lifted in December 2012 after two earth tremors were caused by fracking in 2011.

Cuadrilla said it intended to “apply for planning permission to drill, hydraulically fracture and test the flow of gas from up to four exploration wells on each of the sites” at Roseacre Wood, near Elswick, and Preston New Road, west of Little Plumpton.

The company will begin consultation with residents, ahead of seeking planning permission in coming months to drill and frack the wells.

Drilling could commence around the end of this year, with fracking taking place early in 2015, subject to planning and permitting.
