Mystery surrounds missing Eric Morecambe poster

Morecambe Library after the poster teasing the new Eric Morecambe art exhibition was mysteriously removed.

Organisers of the ‘The Art Show Wot We Done’ are unsure whether the giant poster has been stolen, illegally removed or destroyed from the wall of Morecambe Library.

The poster, which cost more than £360 to print, was designed by Morecambe artist Shane Johnstone to promote the exhibition, which starts this Saturday at the library and runs until July 9.

However the poster was also destined to be included in a charity auction and predicted to have raised hundreds of pounds.

Organisers, Morecambe Artist Colony, have been left with an unhappy start for an exhibition designed to be a celebration of Morecambe’s famous comedian.

Shane Johnstone said: “If a member of the public has noticed anyone with rather theatrical wallpaper or someone with slightly crispy curtains we’d be delighted to hear from them.” Shane had permission to use the poster for the exhibition. Library owners, Lancashire County Council and Lancaster City Council said they have not removed it.

This isn’t the first time publicity material for a Morecambe event has mysteriously disappeared over the past few weeks.

Banners and leaflets promoting Disco Inferno at The Platform on May 1 and the Morecambe Variety Festival at the Winter Gardens on April 30 and May 1 also went missing prior to the events.

The Eric Morecambe poster will be printed again for free by White Lund company Alpha Engravings. The new poster will be of a smaller scale and will feature inside the library during the exhibition.
