A new cycling path from Cumbria to Lancaster will be created after the Morecambe Bay Partnership won a £1.9m Heritage Lottery Fund grant.

Around 200km of routes will be connected and sign-posted between Walney and Glasson to make the new family-friendly Bay Cycle Way.

It is one of several projects to be funded over five years from January as part of the organisation’s £2.9m Headlands to Headspace scheme.

Backed by grants, it aims to help communities restore, enhance and celebrate the bay’s natural and cultural heritage and boost the local economy.

Susannah Bleakley, the partnership’s executive director, said: “We are thrilled that the HLF is providing funding for this fantastic scheme, which will greatly benefit local communities and make the bay area even more vibrant.

“Morecambe Bay is unique and we want to shout about it and encourage everyone to find out more about it and get involved in looking after it.

“This exciting scheme will be a catalyst for community renewal and sustainable heritage management.”

The other projects are oral history work to record stories behind fishing traditions, community archaeology training, caring for natural habitats and creating maps to encourage new visitors to explore the region’s history.
