Morecambe and Lancaster pubs help out Rosemere charity

A trio of local pubs, which pride themselves on being at the heart of their communities, have joined forces to show that there are more ways to serve patrons than just with a pint.

From now on, The Owls Nest in Morecambe, The Station Hotel, Caton, and The Bowerham in Lancaster are fundraising for Rosemere Cancer Foundation in a variety of novel ways.

Business partner Andrew Barker said: “Pubs have always been at the heart of their community and this trio is no exception.

“Increasingly, going to the pub is more about catching up with friends or enjoying time with family. They fulfil a hugely important social and community role and that’s why so many soap opera storylines are centred in and around their fictional pubs.

“We want to strengthen community ties and to us, there’s no better way of doing this than by supporting a charity such as Rosemere Cancer Foundation that is so close to so many people’s hearts for the work it does, which is all at a local level.”

All three pubs have adopted a Cupful of Support scheme whereby 10p from every hot drink sold will be donated to Rosemere. The Station Hotel is also donating 10p from every pizza sold through its newly launched takeaway pizza service. In addition, the trio will be hosting weekly Jack the Joker competitions in support of Rosemere.

Cathy Skidmore, Rosemere’s corporate fundraising manager, said: “It’s fantastic that this trio of popular pubs want to help us in this way and goes to show that when it comes to community spirit, you need look no further than the local pub and its patrons.”

Rosemere Cancer Foundation spends the donations it receives on vital equipment, research and training that cannot be funded by the NHS as it strives to bring world class cancer treatments and services to local cancer patients throughout South Cumbria and Lancashire via their local hospitals and the region’s radiotherapy centre at the Rosemere Cancer Centre at Royal Preston Hospital.

Among Rosemere’s most recent local projects is providing funding for the new quiet room in the Oncology Unit at Royal Lancaster Infirmary, which opened in May.

The charity gave £20,000 to the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, which manages the hospital, so it could convert an unused bathroom area into a comfortable, informal space.
