High turnout of Lancaster voters in the EU referendum

A total of 73,098 residents voted in Thursday's referendum - a 72.69 per cent turnout.

Votes are now being counted at Lancaster's Ashton Hall to determine whether the Lancaster district wants to see Britain leave or remain in the EU.

A result is expected between 3.30am and 4am.

Janet Hall, chief counting agent for Lancaster Labour In, said: "From our point of view we want to see where that turnout is from because it's clear there's a difference between Lancaster and Morecambe & Lunesdale.

"It's really hard to call at the moment. We are just trying to concentrate on our district and not look at the national figures.

"For me, the result could throw up a lot of questions, particularly for the Labour party and what our voters want."
