A photographer who worked for 40 years at the Lancaster Guardian has died at the age of 83.

John Hartup was a stalwart of the newspaper, starting out as a young photographer before taking on the chief photographer role until he retired in 1987.

Born in Wales, John lived most of his life in Lancaster, latterly in Scotforth.

He met his wife Mavis at a party in 1954, and the couple married on June 25 1955.

They went on to have two daughters, Jane and Ann, and a son, Simon.

They also have five grandchildren aged between three and 29.

In his spare time John was a keen model engineer, and one of his engines is on show in York Steam Museum.

John was taken into St John’s Hospice on his and Mavis’s 59th wedding anniversary earlier this year.

He had previously fought cancer but also suffered from heart problems, and he remained in the hospice until he died on July 24.

His funeral will be held at Lancaster & Morecambe Crematorium tomorrow, Friday, August 1.
