Residents and staff at a care home were left devastated after their beloved pet dog was left for dead after a hit and run.

Lulu the terrier suffered a broken leg and shoulder and needed emergency veterinary treatment when she was hit by a car on Morecambe Road after escaping through a window at the home.

But the care home is now struggling after receiving hefty bills of more than £2,000 for Lulu’s specialist treatment.

Manager of the Raycroft Unit, Martin Barnes, said: “I haven’t got the words to describe the driver that drove off and left Lulu after hitting her.

“Two people came to the door to tell us what happened after they witnessed the incident. They said the driver was in a silver Mondeo. She is a much loved dog and how anyone could be so heartless I don’t know.

“We are pleading with people for donations towards Lulu’s treatment to help out.”

Resident Alice Hindle, 91, said: “She is a very loving dog and she jumps up on my bed every morning and gives me a kiss. She is a little fighter and she is so friendly and goes to everybody.

“It would be devastating if we lost her.”

The accident happened at 3pm on Wednesday, April 23.

lAnyone who can help with donations towards Lulu’s treatment can contact the unit on 01524 420303 and ask for Martin or Ashley.
