Youngsters from Unique Kidz join in the Children in Need day fun recently.

Disabled children’s charity Unique Kidz and Co is celebrating after hearing that it has been awarded more than £75,000 by Children in Need.

The funding will start from April 2014 and last three years and will be used to pay for current and new staff.

Caroline Costello, development manager at Unique Kidz and Co, said: “The award from Children in Need is a fantastic endorsement of the work we do with disabled children in the local area.

“The fact that this is the second time that Children in Need has supported us shows how highly our services are valued.”

The funding will be used to pay for current play workers in the after school and holiday clubs offered by Unique Kidz and Co and will also be used for staff needed for a new weekly Saturday Youth Club which the charity plans to run from its new building when it opens in April next year.

Caroline added: “We are very excited that with the Children in Need funding we will now be able to expand our services to disabled children and young people to the weekends.

“We know from parents that there is a need for activities for disabled children at weekends.

“Many of these children and young people feel isolated because they have so few social opportunities so we are aiming to offer a wide range of enjoyable, social activities for them.”

To celebrate their funding success on Children in Need day, the children at the after school club did activities based on a ‘Show us your Spots’ theme including decorating fairy cakes with spots, spotty face painting and dressing up as Pudsey Bear.

Last month, Unique Kidz and Co launched its Kit it out for the Kidz campaign to raise funds to kit out its new purpose-built centre of excellence now taking shape at Lancaster Leisure Park.

But the charity urgently needs to raise £75,000 before April so that it can equip the centre with the essential equipment it needs to open. Top of its list are mobile hoists and changing tables, children’s chairs and tables, cupboards, a cooker, a fridge and indoor and outdoor play equipment.

Anyone wanting to support the Kit it out for the Kidz campaign can do so in a number of ways.

You can purchase or donate towards an item needed for the new Centre of Excellence, text KITK14 and the amount you would like to donate to 700700, adopt Unique Kidz and Co as your company’s Charity of the Year, become a charity sponsor, sign up for monthly giving, donate to the Kit it out for the Kidz Just Giving page or hold an event in your workplace or school.
