A YOUNG woman was rescued from rising tides after being trapped up to her waist on the sands in Morecambe.

The woman became stuck in mud on the beach opposite Morecambe clock tower just before 6.30pm on Tuesday.

By the time lifeboat and coastguard crews had reached her, the tide was around her waist.

She was freed from the sinking sand and taken by ambulance to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary for a check-up, but was not seriously hurt.

A coastguard spokesman said the woman, thought to be about 20 years old, had managed to raise the alarm by using her mobile phone to contact relatives, who then called the emergency services.

Morecambe and Knott End coastguards were called to the scene, along with the Morecambe RNLI crew.

The spokesman said walkers should be wary of the incoming tides and sinking sand across the bay.

“The sands of Morecambe Bay are notoriously dangerous and more recently with the amount of rain we have had it has been even more treacherous.

“People need to be very wary walking on the sands at this time of year.

“Even if the tide is out, with the amount rain the sand is still very soft.”
