Up to 16 inches of snow is expected across the UK over the next couple of days, according to The Met Office.

Severe and unusual weather conditions with up to 16 inches of snow are forecast by The Met Office for much of the UK over the next couple of days.

Snow is forecast for Morecambe and Lancaster from 9pm today, Tuesday, until teatime on Saturday, March 23.

Heavy snow is expected across northern and central parts of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and North Wales overnight tonight and into tomorrow.

Lower levels are likely to see around four inches (10cm) while on higher ground that could reach around 16 inches (40cm).

Temperatures will also plummet and will feel like -5 on Friday and -4 on Saturday.

Gale force winds of up to 50mph threaten to bring blizzards to northern areas, leading to warnings of snow drifts.

Met Office forecaster Mark Wilson said: “For this time of year it is unusual, we are supposed to be in spring. It is a severe weather event.” The Met Office, working alongside the Department of Health, has warned that severe weather action is needed to protect the vulnerable and elderly across the North of the country.

The health warning, which is in place until Sunday morning, states that there is a “90% probability of severe cold weather” which “could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services”.

March is set to be one of the coldest in decades.
