Turbine plans up in the air

A SPECIAL meeting of Hornby Parish Council voted to oppose plans for 20 more wind turbines near the existing belt at Caton Moor.

Community Windpower has submitted plans to Lancaster City Council for the turbines, which could generate 50 megawatts of electricity.

Councillors at the packed meeting voted 6-4 in favour of objecting to the 54million scheme.

The meeting at Hornby Primary School was attended by residents and members of anti-turbine groups including Protect The Lune Valley, Friends of Eden, Lakeland and Lunesdale Scenery (FELLS) and Stop Turbines in Lunesdale Environment (STILE).

There was also a presentation by project manager Gillian Cropper.

Parish councillor, Arthur Grundy, said: "I think only two people spoke in favour of the windmills.

"The objections included the visual impact, destruction of the peat bog – which would release carbon dioxide – possible flooding and the access off the A683, which is one of the most dangerous roads in the country."

The application is likely to be considered by the city council planning committee.
