TK Maxx to open in Lancaster

THE Lancaster economy was this week given a boost with news that fashion and homeware store TK Maxx is to move into the city.

The chain will take over the former Woolworths site in Market Square. The new store could create more than 50 jobs.

Woolworths closed on January 2, with the loss of 41 full and part-time jobs. A spokesman for TK Maxx, currently the largest cut-price

retailer in the world, said they hoped to move into the property by the end of the summer.

Meanwhile, a children's shoe shop is to open at the former Scott's Sports store in Sir Simon's Arcade.

Scott's closed last month after nearly 40 years when owners Danny and Hazel Rogerson decided to call it a day.

Little-Owl Shoes, which will open in June, is the brainchild of mother-of-two Elizabeth Smalley, who says she came up with the idea after difficulties finding footwear for her teenage children.

Mrs Smalley, of Brettargh Drive, Haverbreaks, who has no previous experience running a shop, will be assisted by her husband Vincent.

"This will be a first for Lancaster," said Mrs Smalley, who most recently worked as a visitor services assistant at Lancaster City Museum. "I know we are in the grips of a recession but everybody I've spoken to has been really positive and said it is something we need here."
