Special night in Emma's memory
A LANCASTER schoolgirl who lost her life to cystic fibrosis will be remembered at a fundraising event later this month.
Emma Waggett died last July following a lung transplant at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. She was 15.
Now her parents, Stuart and Sarah, have organised a Fifties and Sixties night in Morecambe to raise money for The Cystic Fibrosis Trust which provided them with information and support throughout Emma's life.
"Emma's dream was to be able to walk to school with her friends and to dance," said Stuart.
He hopes that people will take to the dance floor at Smokey O'Connors in her memory on March 20.
This will be the first charity night staged by Morecambe Rock & Roll Club which Stuart helps to run. The club, which meets monthly at the Morecambe Street venue, attracts a regular crowd from those who remember the early days of rock and roll through to converts like Stuart, 40, and even today's teenagers.
Emma herself also sometimes went along.
The former Our Lady's Catholic College pupil was first diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at 18 months.
"We noticed she wasn't thriving as she should and she was prone to chesty coughs and infections," Stuart explained.
Once diagnosed, there followed years of hospital visits and stays, intensive physiotherapy and a tough regime of medication.
During the last four years Emma was on oxygen 24 hours a day and also used a wheelchair.
Despite her difficulties, Emma still managed to regularly attend school and took her GCSEs early.
Her results – all passes – came just weeks after her death.
It was Emma's decision to be placed on the waiting list for a lung transplant.
"We wouldn't have gone ahead with the transplant if she hadn't wanted it," said Stuart, who also has a 10-year-old son, James.
"It was that chance, that hope of a longer life which kept her spirits up. We have no regrets about going ahead with it."
The charity event which starts at 7.30pm will feature Jukebox Jive DJ Steve Middlesborough, live music by Kelly Jump and Eddie Robbins (aka Stuart ), and food all for 6 a ticket.
For tickets call Stuart on 01524 33180 or 07853238705.
