Roof falls in on city homes plan

Plans for 62 new homes near Lancaster Station have fallen through.

pplicant the Regenda Group was given the go-ahead to build the apartments and two-storey homes, 51 of which were to be affordable, at the former G&L Car Services site off Wheatfield Street.

But since the approval was granted by Lancaster City Council’s planning committee in March 2011, Reganda has failed to find a developer willing to meet the price the landowner is demanding for the site.

A council planning report says that has meant it has been unable to take forward the scheme and the required legal agreement has not been signed.

The planning committee therefore followed planning officers’ advice in withdrawing their approval for the scheme.

At the same meeting, however, councillor approved separate outline proposals for 50 new homes, nearly one-third of which would be affordable, at Laund Fields, off Stoney Lane in Galgate. The development, on the site of a former car garage, a caravan site and farmland, includes a new access off the A6, and will mean the existing field access being closed.

Applicant Simon Slack has agreed to provide a separate car park for Main Road residents, which would mean on-street parking provision on the A6 through Galgate being removed.

The scheme sparked 21 objection letters from residents, whose concerns included traffic congestion, parking and the loss of green land. Ellel Parish Council also objected amid concerns over insufficient parking provision, traffic and drainage.

But committee members, including Ellel ward councillor Helen Helme, gave the plans the green light.

After the meeting, Coun Helme said: “We need more housing in Galgate, especially affordable housing for young people, and we are happy about the idea of a communal car park to help get cars off the A6.”
