Pupils in bus smash
SCHOOLCHILDREN on a bus being driven by a trainee driver escaped injury this morning after it collided with the back of a staionary waggon.
The Stagecoach bus was transporting pupils to Ripley St Thomas CE School when the accident happened in North Road at 8.25am, sparking delays for rush-hour drivers.
It collided with the white LDV waggon, which had been parked up, partly on the pavement, by contractors preparing to demolish the former Warehouse nightclub.
The impact smashed the left side of the bus's front windscreen and contorted the metalwork below.
It is understood the trainee bus driver was being supervised by a trainer at the time of the accident.
The waggon was shunted into the back of a stationary green Mitsubishi four by four, also belonging to the contractor.
Neither of the workmen in each of the two vehicles was seriously hurt. although the 35-year-old in the waggon cabin suffered pain in his shoulder and hip.
Paramedics were called but did not have to take anyone to hospital.
Another bus arrived to take the children on to school and the bus was removed from the scene at 9.15am.
