Pupil Parliament in session
Lancaster University students from LUSU Involve (volunteering unit), Louise Turner, Lucy Rowlands, Matt Eccles, Ben Widdowson, Cheng Jiang and Julie Jaiyen, with representatives from local primary schools who took part in the pupil parliament event in the LICA building on Friday.
Pupils from a number of local primary schools met together to plan a social enterprise project.
The aim of the day, held at Lancaster University, was to enable pupils to identify community issues and how they can be resolved through enterprise and teamwork.
Pupils were introduced to social enterprise ideas that are both realistic and have a long-term potential that will benefit the area in which the children live.
The schools worked with volunteers from Lancaster University Student Union Involve group.
These students from the university led sessions in combating community issues through team work, introduction to business and social enterprise and working as a committee.
Each of the school representatives will now take these ideas back to their school and formulate an action plan for working in school on an enterprise project.
Catherine Armistead, headteacher at Silverdale St John’s CE School, said: “The children had a fantastic day with the volunteers from Lancaster University and each school is now planning a social enterprise project that will help the school as well as a charity of their choice.” The schools involved are Lancaster Road Primary School, Wilson’s Endowed Over Kellet Primary School, Silverdale St John’s CE Primary School, Moorside Primary School, Grosvenor Park Primary School, Bolton-le-Sands CE Primary School, Halton St Wilfrid’s, Cathedral RC Primary School and Great Wood Primary School.
The meeting was held as part of the Lancaster and Morecambe Pupil Parliament which has been running for the last four years and provides an opportunity for pupils from different primary schools within the area to talk about issues that effect them and helps them to develop ideas and strategies to do something about them.
The Pupil Parliament has also had input into the work of The Children’s Trust in the area and engaged with a number of city, county councillors and local MPs to make changes in the area.
Each school will now formulate an action plan for their enterprise project and the Pupil Parliament will meet again in March 2013 to share their progress in the projects.
