Police find child pictures on man's laptop

A MAN who had over 60,000 indecent images of children stored on computers at his home has escaped jail.

Police raided the home of Matthew Jankowskyj, 24, in Albert Road, Morecambe on April 27, and discovered two laptops, a hard drive, a contract relating to an inflatable doll and two cannabis plants being grown in the wardrobe.

Jankowskyj, who has a previous conviction for possessing indecent images from 2005, was arrested and admitted downloading and possessing images on the computers which ranged in severity from level one to the most serious level five pictures.

The folders had been labelled to give an indication of their contents with titles including Naked Baby Girl and Baby 1-3 years.

Jankowskyj told police he would view around 100 a week to satisfy his sexual urges and asked for a further 63,000 images to be taken into consideration - including almost 200 level five images.

However the court heard he had not distributed the images or committed any 'contact' sexual offences.

Following his arrest Jankowskyj spent four months on remand before being sentenced at Preston Crown Court this week.

Judge Robert Brown said: "It is not only in the interests of society at large but also in your interests that rather than simply return you to prison for a few months more where there is no opportunity for you to undergo any kind of therapeutic program it would be better to hold over you for the next two years the prospect of a prison sentence while at the same time offering you all the assistance you need."

Jankowskyj received a 12-month prison sentence suspended for two years and must undergo two-years supervision including sexual offending programmes.

A Sexual Offences Prevention Order bans him from unsupervised contact with children under 16 and he is disqualified from working with children indefinitely.

No separate penalty was imposed in relation to the cannabis plants.
